The Rock is made of granite and gneiss, formed by the cooling and solidification of magma below the Earth's surface. Over time, erosion exposed the Rock, which then became a natural fortress for the Egba people.

In 1963, it became part of Morocco's modern state university system and was renamed "University of Al Quaraouiyine" two years later. Scholars believe that al-Qarawiyyin functioned efficiently as a madrasa till after World War II.
