EPL: Why Man City turned down opportunity to sign Chelsea star

It has been revealed that Manchester City turned down the chance to sign Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid before Chelsea did.

The Spain international eventually joined Chelsea on loan on transfer deadline day with an option to make the deal permanent for £30m at the end of the season.

According to Daily Star, Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola was not interested in bringing Saul to his squad, so the deal was rejected.

According to the newspaper, Guardiola's side were approached by Atletico Madrid, who proposed a swap involving Bernardo Silva in a player-plus-cash move.

But the deal was of no interest to Man City as they were looking for £40m for Silva.

And this made it very easy for Chelsea to get their own deal done and now Saul will be competing for a place in Tuchel's starting XI against Aston Villa next weekend.

Saul Niguez was only Chelsea's second major deal of the summer, following the signing of Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan.

Manchester City only signed Jack Grealish for £100 million this summer as their hopes of signing Harry Kane from Tottenham was dashed.
