Rio Ferdinand advises Christian Eriksen not to play again after collapse

Former England defender, Rio Ferdinand has advised Denmark midfielder, Christian Eriksen not to think about playing football again after he suffered a cardiac arrest during his country's Euro 2020 1-0 defeat against Finland last weekend.

Eriksen collapsed on the pitch before the end of the first half of Denmark's clash against Finland on Saturday.

The Inter Milan playmaker was resuscitated on the pitch, with players and fans watching on in distress before he was taken to the hospital for a further check-up.

The Danish Football Federation said that Eriksen is "stable" and he remains in hospital.

But Ferdinand feels Eriksen should now only focus on his family and getting healthy, not his football career.

Asked if he thinks Eriksen will play again, Ferdinand said on his Vibe With Five YouTube show: "I don't think he plays again, I have got to be honest.

"If I am him, I am not thinking about that probably, I would just want to be healthy for the sake of my family really."

He added: "I got a bit emotional, I have got to be honest.

"Just to see that and to see the effects on his wife, the pictures of his wife or his girlfriend coming through as well, it was just so emotional.

"It hits you and just makes you think about life, man, and the importance of really appreciating life and enjoying your life.

"It's just great we can sit here and he has made comments that are now live in the media about he didn't know what happened, he is keen to find out what happened.

"I think they are saying [it was] a cardiac arrest, I wouldn't like to jump to conclusions, but I think that is the rumours that I am hearing.

"But I just think he will obviously be evaluating his life post this, and just hopefully, he continues his recovery in the vein that he is at the moment - which seems to be positive.

"It was a day that football stands still and you go, "Wow!" It is a tournament, we are happy it's started and stuff, but when situations like that happen, you think, 'Wow, ok, just look at life'."
