Barcelona vs Cadiz: Messi makes history, surpasses Xavi's record after La Liga draw

On Sunday, Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi, made history following his side's 1-1 draw against Cadiz in the La Liga.

Messi also surpassed the club's legend, Xavi Hernández's La Liga appearances for the Catalan club after Barcelona's draw with Cadiz.

A first-half goal from Messi and a late second-half penalty from Alex Fernandez ensured both Barcelona and Cadiz shared a point each at Camp Nou.

According to OptaJose, Messi's goal means the Argentine captain has scored in six La Liga games in a row (nine goals) for the first time since February 2019 (eight appearances).

Messi also becomes the first Barcelona player with the most LaLiga appearances of 506, surpassing Xavi's 505 appearances after the game.

However, the 33-year-old is far from beating Real Betis' Joaquin, who holds the record for the highest number of appearances in the Spanish top-flight league.

The 39-year-old midfielder has played in 567 games for Real Betis.

To beat that record, Messi needs to sign another new contract with Barcelona and stay at the Blaugrana for at least a season.
