AFCON 2019: South Africa coach reveals why they lost to Nigeria

South Africa coach, Stuart Baxter, has lamented his side's timidity, after they were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations by Nigeria.

The Super Eagles beat Bafana Bafana 2-1 at the Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday night, to qualify for the semi-finals.

Samuel Chukwueze gave the Nigerians the lead in the first half, before Bongani Zungu levelled for South Africa following a VAR decision.

William Troost-Ekong netted the winner in the dying seconds of the game.

Baxter, speaking at his post-match press conference, admitted it was a tough defeat to accept, but congratulated the Nigerians.

"It's hard to lose in the dying minutes of a game but I thought we weren't brave enough in the first half and we didn't defend well enough.

"We tried to come out in the second half but we left spaces for Nigeria to exploit.

"Congratulations to Gernot Rohr and his team," Baxter said.
