Top African midfielder who is set to face Super Eagles at AFCON 2019 collapses, dies during football match

Papy Faty, a Burundian international, collapsed and died during a football match after he disobeyed medical advice to quit the game because of his heart condition.

The 28-year-old was involved in a league game for Swaziland side Malanti Chiefs when he fell ill and died as a result.

The midfielder had ignored doctors who warned him not to play football because of the condition of his heart.

It is understood that his contracts were cancelled by two of his former clubs and reports claim there was an incident of Faty collapsing on a pitch.

Faty's promising career started when he signed for Turkish top side Trabzonspor in 2011.

But he left without playing a match in the Turkish Super Lig and spent the remainder of his career plying his trade in leagues across Africa.

The midfielder enjoyed his best years playing for South African league side Bidvest Wits, but he was released when the issue with his heart problems surfaced.

Reports also claim Faty went on to play in the South African league for Real Kings, but that deal was cut short after he apparently collapsed during a game.
