Gunmen kill manager of former Super Eagles star in Benin (photo)

The manager of an hotel in Benin, Edo state, belonging to the Nigerian footballer Osaze Odemwingie has reportedly been killed by unknown gunmen.

Osato Okunkpolo is said to be the name of the hotel manager located along Erediauwa Street, off Upper Sokponba Road, Ikpoba-Okha local government according to Daily Trust citing NAN.

He was reported to have been killed on Sunday evening, February 17, at the hotel by the gunmen who forcefully gained access to the premises.

While confirming the tragic incident, Chidi Nwabuzor who is the Police Public Relation officer in Edo state said that the deceased was hit by a bullet in a fight between two rival cult groups.

''The incident is true. It is true that a murder occurred at Odemwungie Hotel on the February 17, 2019.

''It was between two secret cult rival groups - the Aye and Eiye cult groups.

"During the process, the manager was killed inside the hotel and it was not an armed robbery attack,''
Chidi said according to the report.

Born in Russia, Osaze Odemwingie started his professional football career with Bendel Insurance of Benin before moving to Europe and played for clubs like Stoke City, Cardiff City and Lille.

Odemwingie who last played for the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the 2014 World Cup is currently playing for Indonesian club Madura United.
