Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been crowned the Spanish League top scorer after netting 34 goals in 36 topflight matches last season.

The 31-year-old was handed the award in a ceremony which was staged in Spain on Monday - and was later sighted posing with all five top scorers awards he has won.

He was also won his sixth Alfredo Di Stefano trophy at the same program to bring his individual awards tally to 160.

He broke into the Catalans first team in 2004 and has remained at the summit of his game, helping them to win titles both domestically and on the continent.

Having won 160 trophies, his next target will be to hit 200 awards before wrapping up his football career.

The Argentine won his first individual honour at the age of 18 (2005) after helping Argentina to the FIFA U20 World Cup in Holland.

He won tournament's Golden Ball (Top goalscorer) and Golden Shoe (Best player) awards after beating Nigeria in the process.

That feat gave him recognition back home - winning his first of his 11 Argentina's Footballer of the Year.

However, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid in 2009 made the competition tougher as the duo dominated world football for over a decade.

They have five Ballon d'Or awards each to their credits among several others both at the club and country levels.

Messi has already scored nine goals in 10 appearances this term and he will be hoping to surpass his record for the 2017-18 season.
