Chelsea reject £18m offer from Arsenal for David Luiz as Gunners plot to sign Brazil defender

Arsenal have had a bid for David Luiz rejected by Chelsea, according to reports.

Luiz, the Brazil defender, is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, especially if Antonio Conte remains as manager. Though he played a key role at the heart of Chelsea's defence when the Blues won the Premier League in 2016/17, the 31-year-old made just 17 appearances last season; admittedly, he was injured for large spells.

Conte suggested Luiz could have left Chelsea during the January transfer window, and it appears he remains on the market this summer.

And, according to Le10Sport, Arsenal have looked to take advantage of Luiz's availability by making a formal bid for the centre-back.

It is reported that the Gunners have had a bid worth around £18million (€20m) rejected by Chelsea, and they have not yet decided whether to return to the Stamford Bridge club with an improved offer.

Unai Emery wants to reshape Arsenal's starting XI following his appointment as Arsene Wenger's successor at the Emirates, and he's already completed the signing of Stephan Lichtsteiner, the full-back, from Juventus on a free transfer.

Further deals for Bernd Leno, the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper, Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and midfielder Lucas Torreira of Sampdoria are expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.
