Ross Barkley breaks silence over failed Chelsea transfer on deadline day

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has finally cleared up the confusion over his failed transfer to Chelsea after reportedly walking out of a medical on deadline day.

The England international has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park all summer after failing to sign a new contract, and was expected to join either Chelsea or Tottenham.
In the end, it was claimed Barkley was on the verge of a move to Stamford Bridge, but had a change of heart midway through his medical procedures.

Some reports have since claimed then 23-year-old would still rather join Spurs instead, but the player has now taken to Twitter to explain his side of the story.

He said: 'Contrary to a number of reports in the press, I did not undertake a medical with any club at any point.

'I simply decided that due to my injury, it would be best to make a decision on my future and assess all my options in January when fully fit.

'Thanks for all of the support.'

This ties in with some other reports that Barkley was not keen on moving whilst injured, with the player currently expected to miss around three months of action.

However, it suggests his potential switch to the Blues was perhaps not as advanced as other sources claimed at the time, while he also neglected to specify the team he seemed set to join.

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will revisit their interest in the Toffees star in January, with Antonio Conte seemingly moving instead to sign midfielder Danny Drinkwater from Leicester City.

Conte had been keen to bring in another central midfield player after Nemanja Matic's sale to Manchester United earlier in the summer.
