IG to restructure police

The acting Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has said he will restructure the Nigeria Police Force and deal with corruption in the force.

The police boss stated this during an interactive session with a joint committee of the Senate and House Committee on Police Affairs.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Don Awunah, the police boss also said he was determined to ensure that police officers were well taken care of.

During the session, the Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, Dauda Jika, told the police chief that there were many complaints made against the force by policemen.

"Responding, the Inspector-General of Police among other things mentioned the determination of his management team to implement core international best practices in policing while restructuring the Nigeria Police Force to be a more accountable and responsive Police Force. The Inspector-General stressed that the welfare of the police was of utmost importance and priority under his administration.

"As for the incessant security challenges bedevilling the country, he said he had concluded plans to restructure, equip and retrain police personnel. In order to gain the trust of the public and restore integrity in the Force, the IGP promised to restructure X-squad whose mandate would be to curb corruption within and outside the force," the statement said.

Idris further told the joint session that his administration would establish an "Eminent Persons Forum" that would include retired security agents, elder statesmen and other stakeholders in all the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, in order to tap from their resourcefulness.
