The Director-General, DG, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, has described as shocking, the death of corps member, Ngozi Onyekwere, who was burnt to death in a fatal accident in Akwa Ibom state.
The late Ngozi, an Accounting graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, met her ill fate on June 23, after her vehicle, a Toyota Camry suddenly caught fire in Mbiokporo Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, LGA of the state at about 3pm.

The 26-year-old was burnt beyond recognition while the driver of the vehicle and the commuter at the front sit reportedly escaped.


Her funeral, which held on Thursday in her home town in Imo state sent shivers down well wishers' spines as carcass was laid to rest.

Meanwhile, the deceased was meant to pass out from the NYSC scheme next month. She was returning from the government house where she was posted when the crash occurred.

The DG of the Corps, represented by Reverend Akinolu Ajayi, said during the funeral that the late Ngozi's demise was shocking and painful to the NYSC.

The DG was quoted as saying, "It is very painful that death struck when Ngozi was serving her nation, just two months to her passing out of the scheme."


Also speaking during the funeral, the Coordinator of the NYSC in Akwa Ibom state, Mrs Ngozi Chukwuka, described the late Ngozi as a diligent corps member, adding that her posting to the government house was based on merit.

The coordinator said, "When the Akwa Ibom State Government House asked for three corps members who studied Accounting, Ngozi was among the three that scaled through out of the 38 graduates interviewed.

"It is not the NYSC that caused her death. Her death during the NYSC programme was one of the vicissitudes of life. It is pertinent at this juncture to disclose that the NYSC bore all the expenses incurred for the burial of the deceased. It is our prayer that God grants her soul eternal repose."
