Why President Buhari's Fight Against Corruption is Not Yielding Result - Wike

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike has revealed why the effort of President Muhammadu Buhari against corruption is not yielding the right result.

Wike said the reason is because of the inability of the national institutions - Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission - to act independently.

The Governor revealed this during a courtesy visit by officials of Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs, UK, to Government House, Port Harcourt, yesterday.

He said that the "political influence has weakened the fight against corruption. It is difficult to fight corruption when the institutions are weak.

"Claiming to fight corruption with weak institutions may just be a political ploy to attract sympathy from western countries."

The EFCC yesterday revealed that between January and August 2017, it recovered about N409 billion and secured 137 convictions nationwide.

He spoke at an interactive meeting with media executives that held in Abuja.

The agency also revealed that over a month ago, the Commission recovered over N329billion from a group of oil marketers for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.
