Kogi Worried Over Abandoned Babies

Kogi State government says it is worried over the high rate of abandoned children across the state.

The state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Bolanle Ampoitan, who stated this yesterday in Lokoja, said there were over seven hundred babies in 18 registered orphanage homes in the state.

She said the figures became worrisome as relatives who took the babies to the home were often reluctant to give them up for adoption and would not bother the babies well-being after dumping them at the homes.

She however said the state government has given a directive that relatives who take babies to any orphanage homes must make monthly visitation to the homes, and agree that after two years such babies will be given to foster parents if they are not willing to take them out.
