Gbenga Odumade, a 32-year old man, who jumped into a mosque through the fence to steal, has confessed that he actually visited mosques to pack assorted shoes usually kept in front of the mosques by the worshippers.
P.M Express reports that the incident happened at the Central Mosque located at Ijesha Road at the Itire area of Lagos.
The convict admitted that he was aware that some worshippers go to mosques with assorted brands of foot wears and he wanted to cart them away to raise money.
The Ogun State-born Gbenga revealed that he came all the way from Shagamu and slept around the mosque in order to carry out the operation. But he was unfortunate, he was caught and handed over to the police.
He pleaded guilty on the charge of going to the place of worship to steal before Isolo Magistrates court and was sentenced to one week community service.
Odumade said that he was a driver and lived at 23 Taiwo Olomolo Street, Agric area in Shagamu. He reportedly came to the mosque because he was familiar with the area as had a job as driver around the area.
Odumade was arrested inside the mosque early in the morning by one of the worshippers who saw him when he jumped through the fence.
He was charged to court, he initially pleaded not guilty and was granted bail and remanded in prison custody.
It was gathered that when the matter came up at the court, he changed, pleaded guilty and asked for leniency.
The prosecutor, Mr Oje Uagbale presented the facts before the court and asked the court to sentence him accordingly, to serve as deterrent to those who might want to try such in the future. The presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.G. Oghre found him guilty as charged and sentenced him accordingly.
P.M. Express reports that while Odumade was serving his sentence in the court premises, he vowed that he will not go back to crime because it does not pay at all.
