Top English club sacks manager after 9 games without a single win

Bristol City have axed Lee Johnson as club manager following the side's Saturday, July 4, 1-0 defeat to Cardiff.

Bristol confirmed Johnson's dismissal immediately after the clash, with the club announcing assistant boss Dean Holden will take over on interim basis.

"Lee Johnson was this evening relieved of his role as Bristol City Head Coach," the Championship club said in a tweet.

"Current Assistant Head Coach Dean Holden will take over immediately in a caretaker capacity as the club look to appoint a successor," the tweet announced.

The Robins' Chief Executive Mark Ashton hailed Johnson's significant impact at the club but insisted change in management was necessary.

"We recognise the huge amount of work that Lee has put in over the last four-and-a-half years to move this club forward and we thank him for all his efforts," Ashton pointed out in a statement.

"However, success in football is ultimately judged by results and league position and the Board believes that a change of management is needed now for Bristol City," he further added.

A late strike from substitute Danny Ward was all Cardiff needed to down Bristol in the league meeting.

The result meant Bristol are yet to win a single match in nine under the tutelage of Johnson who has spent four years at Ashton Gate.

The side currently sit 12th on the EFL Championship standings with 55 points.

They will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on Hull City on Wednesday, July 8.
