Sad day for football as Nigerian footballer dies after long battle with sickness

Tragedy struck in Warri, Delta state on Monday, June 15, as Nigerian football star Erhire Akpoyovwire Felix died after he reportedly battled an unknown illness for some time.

It was gathered that the former Warri Wolves striker who was a cult hero for Nigerian National League side J.Atete had been down with illness.

Manager of Heartland football club Fidelis Ilechukwu described Erhire's death as unfortunate, adding that he spoke with the player about twenty-four hours before he heard the sad news of his death.

"We spoke on Sunday and he told me he was still very sick, not until I heard that he passed away on Monday.

He was buried today (Friday, June 19)," the former MFM FC of Lagos manager told Legit.ng on phone.

Recall that in 2029, Erhire Felix made the headlines when he was suspended alongside team-mate Moses Omoduemuke by Warri Wolves for what the club described 'gross indiscipline'.

Meanwhile, Nigerian National League side Bendel Insurance announced the death of their goalkeeper Umar Ahmad Jalingo who died in Gombe after a brief illness.

He reportedly died at home about 24 hours after he was discharged from the hospital.

''It is unfortunate that we have lost one of our players Umar Ahmad Jalingo and the club are in pain and sorrow for the shocking demise as we pray that God should give the family, friends the fortitude to bear the loss,'' the club said in a statement.
