Three ways Chelsea could line up after sealing Timo Werner transfer

Three ways Chelsea could line up after sealing Timo Werner transfer

Chelsea confirmed the £47.5million transfer of Timo Werner on Thursday morning, with the Red Bull Leipzig striker moving to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Werner has banged in 32 goals in all competitions this season and will add an extra attacking threat to the Chelsea squad.

With Hakim Ziyech already signing for the Blues and deals for Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz still potentially on the cards this summer, Frank Lampard's squad is set to look very different to the side that is scrapping for a fourth-placed finish this season.

Werner will bring added flexibility to the side - he can play anywhere across the front three.

Here's how Chelsea could line up next season, utilising the Germany international in different ways.

Werner up top

Tammy Abraham has been the main man through the middle for Chelsea this season, but Lampard will now be able to rotate his main central striker.

The Chelsea legend has a wealth of options to choose from in attacking midfield roles now, with Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Ziyech all capable of playing in different roles behind Werner.

N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have established a solid partnership at the heart of midfield, while Antonio Rudiger has become a key player at the back - even if the futures of the rest of the defenders, and also goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, around him is less than clear.

Werner out wide

Lampard is no stranger to tinkering with his formation and has fielded three centre-backs on occasion.

Young Reece James will provide serious competition to Cesar Azpilicueta - although the Spaniard can also slot into centre-back in this system - while fellow Chelsea youngster Fikayo Tomori will be desperate to work his way into contention to become a first-team regular next season.

Jorginho and the returning Ruben Loftus-Cheek can provide competition for places in midfield, while Werner's versatility can see him work out on either wing, allowing Abraham to play through the middle.

Werner & Abraham partnership

Werner's arrival could also see Lampard lump for two at the top.

The German could look to build a partnership with Abraham up front in multiple systems, which could also include five at the back as opposed to a flat 4-4-2.

Emerson Palmieri's future is hanging in the balance amid the pursuit of Chilwell but it could be Alonso who heads for the exit door, should they land the Leicester full-back, while Willy Caballero has been selected ahead of the under-fire Kepa for periods this season.

Emerging talent Billy Gilmour and England international Ross Barkley are further options that Lampard can select in midfield, while Calum Hudson-Odoi will also be hoping to make a serious mark on the first team next season.
