World's most successful goalkeeper drops ambition to be president in Spain (here's why)

Iker Casillas has dropped his ambitions in becoming the next Spanish FA president, the Spanish legend wrote on his Twitter.

More than 27,000 people with Covid-19 have died in Spain since the outbreak of the deadly disease and Casillas believes unity is the most important thing during this period.

"This makes the elections take a back seat," Casillas said on Twitter.

The Real Madrid legend recently proposed to contest for the position after a successful footballing career.

Casillas' withdrawal means incumbent Luis Rubiales is set to be re-elected unopposed in the August election for the next four years.

The 39-year-old announced his retirement from the game a few months after suffering a heart attack while in training with FC Porto.

The charismatic goalkeeper was given a coaching role with Porto shortly after hanging his gloves.

Casillas had a glittering career with Los Blancos from the youth academy up to the senior level and later became the club captain.

He won five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies with Los Merengues, his last was during the 2013-14 season when Real beat rivals Atletico Madrid to clinch the trophy.

His national team career was also a success, making 167 appearances and winning the European Championships twice as well as the World Cup in 2010.
