Top European club set to be crowned league champions and it is good news for Liverpool fans

Celtic could reportedly be declared Scottish league champions with eight matches still left to play in the division.

The Glasgow-based side was on course to lift this season's title before the league was abruptly suspended due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic.

UEFA was initially opposed to the idea of domestic competitions being ended early as it could compromise the integrity of leagues.

However, the European governing body has since softened that stance, suggesting topflight domestic leagues should be played to conclusion but pledged to consider 'special cases.'

The recommendation could pave way for Celtic to lift the Scottish league title for the ninth time in a row as they currently top the charts with 80 points, 13 more than second-placed Rangers.

Initially, the club's manager Neil Lennon had insisted he would prefer the season to be finish but conceded it not may be possible given the spread of COVID-19 is not slowing down.

Should the Scottish season end early, it could provide a yardstick that could subsequently be followed by others including the Premier League.

Liverpool, who top the standings with a 25-point lead looked set to win the title for the first time in nearly three decades only for the epidemic to halt those hopes.

Presently, England's top tier remains intent on having the rest of the matches of the 2019/20 campaign played to finish.
