Former Sheffield and Juventus striker, Darko Kovacevic, has cheated death after being shot outside his Athens home in Greece.

Kovacevic is said to have been ambushed by two men outside his residence who opened gunfire in his direction.

Thankfully, none of the bullets hit the retired Serbian international, with Marca reporting the former player is out of danger.

The 46-year-old is however said to have suffered minor injuries on his wrist and leg while moving to the ground to avoid being struck by the bullets.

According to SunSport, the assailants later sped off in the belief that they had hit him.

A burnt smart car thought to have been used during the fatal incident was later recovered near the scene of the attack in the neighbourhood of Glyfada to the south of Athens city centre.

During his hey days, Kovacevic was renowned for good movement, technique, and an eye for goal.

He found the back of the net 107 times across two spells with Real Sociedad before moving to the Premier League with Sheffield Wednesday.

He enjoyed successful stints with Lazio and Juventus during his playing career. He is the current sports director of the Serbian football association.
