Tragedy averted as ex-Manchester City striker involved in car crash on New Year

Former Manchester City striker Mario Ballotelli was involved in a car crash right at the turn of the New Year.

The 29-year old was the passenger in a Fiat 500 Abarth which crashed into the gate of a bakery in northern Brescia.

Balloteli, according to reports, was coming from New Years festivities which he decided to celebrate by clubbing.

While neither Balotelli nor his driver on the night was seriously hurt, the Italian striker was forced to make his way to his house in nearby Mompiano on foot

Not the same could be said about the Fiat as it suffered a broken front axle as a result of the crash.

Balotelli has had a fairly glittery career which critics have argued has been marred by his own controversial ways of life.

In his earlier years, he was known for his wildside and was involved in incidents including setting off fireworks in his apartment, causing a fire.

Having seen a decline in his career, Balotelli inevitably had to check his discipline and these days, he plays his football quietly in his former club Brescia.

Brescia are currently in a relegation scruff in the Serie A, and they largely depend on the Italian's quality for inspiration during some games.
