English F.A. aim to eradicate marginal VAR offside decisions after widespread criticism of controversial technology

The Football Association are aiming to lead a challenge to overhaul the use of VAR following its controversial introduction to the Premier League.

The FA and other British football associations will be part of a bid by UEFA to change the rules relating to marginal offside decisions, having seen many players affected by the 'offside armpit' this season.

Roberto Firmino, the Liverpool forward, and Man City's Raheem Sterling have both had goals disallowed during the campaign due to marginal decisions, as have Tottenham in their match against Leicester in September, below.

According to the Times, the use of VAR to overrule such 'armpit' offsides has caused unease in UEFA, and talks between the governing body's president, Aleksander Ceferin, and Britain's associations took place last week.

The various parties agreed to work on changing the use of VAR so offsides are judged on 'clear and obvious error', rather than marginal decisions as they are now.

FIFA must agree to UEFA's proposal to change the protocol, before it is taken to the International Football Association Board (IFAB), who can change the laws of the game in time for the start of next season.
