Arsenal name the only Spanish league player they will sign to improve their defence in January

Premier League giants Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move for Villarreal defender Pau Torres when the January transfer window opens in a matter of weeks.

The Gunners have not been convincing in the English topflight so far this season - sitting sixth on the log with 17 points from 12 matches.

And if the current trend continues, their hope of playing Champions League football next season will not be realised.

Hence, the north Londoners are hoping to strengthen their defence to reduce the rate at which they concede goals while they try to up their goals scoring chances.

SunSport, however, reports that the Gunners will have to cough out about £43 million to secure the signature of the 22-year-old Spaniard.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery brought in a number of players during summer transfer which includes club-record signing Nicolas Pepe for about £72 million, but the star is still struggling in the EPL.

And this has put the Spanish born coach under immense pressure from the fans and other stakeholders who want results.

Torres, 22, could help the Emirates Stadium outfit fortify their back-line if both parties agree at the end of the window.

The defender made a scoring debut for Spain in their 7-0 win over Malta in Euro 2020 qualifier after coming on for Sergio Ramos last weekend.

Manchester City are also said to be monitoring the player's progress.
