South Africa finally get AFCON 2019 revenge as they dump Nigerian out of important competition

Nigeria's U23 national team have been dumped out of the ongoing 2019 Africa Cup of Nations championship in Egypt.

The defending champions finished third on Group B table following their goalless draw against South Africa at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo.

This also means that coach Imama Amapakabo and his armies will not be participating in next year's Olympic Games, having failed to reach the last four stage of the continental championship.

It would be recalled that coach Samson Siasia led the Nigerian squad to finish third at the 2016 edition of the competition - winning bronze, the only medal the country won at the events.

Meanwhile, despite fielding a strong squad which includes Taiwo Awoniyi, Kelechi Nwakali, and Orji Okoronkwo, Imama's boys failed to soar after regulation period.

The defending champions made a couple of efforts into the final quarter of the game but they were wasteful in front of goal.

Although they controlled most part of the possession, their final balls were nothing to write home about as they were unable to convert their chances.

In the other result, Ivory Coast beat Zambia to finish atop of the table with six points while South Africa following with five points.

This means Nigeria and Zambia are the scapegoats in the group as they have been sent packing from the competition.

And at the end of the day, both the Super Falcons and the Olympic Eagles will not be partaking in the games next year.
