Davide Zappacosta set to join Roma on season-long loan deal from Chelsea

Chelsea ace Davide Zappacosta is set to end his two-year stay at Stamford Bridge by joining Roma on a season-long loan.

The Italian joined the club from Torino in a deal worth £23m in 2017.

However, the defender's made just 26 league appearances for the Blues and was reduced to just four turnouts last term.

Lampard made it clear to the 27-year-old that he's surplus to requirements at the club during this summer's pre-season tour and he's keen to make room for Reece James, who is recovering from injury.

Cesar Azpilicueta remains first choice at right-back but his early season form has been a source of worry and James is expected to compete for the spot.

It leaves little room for Zappacosta and Sky Italia claim he'll have a medical in the Italian capital later this week before completing a move to Roma.

The European transfer window is open for another 13 days and Chelsea are not expected to sanction any further departures after Zappacosta leaves.

The Blues are currently serving a two-window transfer ban and made the surprising decision to sell David Luiz to rivals Arsenal earlier in the window.
