Tottenham sign Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in club record £55million transfer

Tottenham have announced the signing of midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for a club record £55m fee.

The 22-year-old France midfielder has penned a six-year deal and becomes Spurs' second signing of the day following the £10m arrival of winger Jack Clarke, who was immediately loaned back to Leeds for the upcoming season.

The £55m deal for Ndombele, which includes a further £10m in add-ons, shatters the club's previous transfer record of £42m, paid to Ajax for Davinson Sanchez in 2017.

After becoming the first team in Premier League history to go two consecutive transfer windows without signing a single player, Tottenham have now spent more than £65m in one day.

Ndombele emerged as Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino's no.1 transfer target this summer following a fine season in Ligue 1.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has previously compared Ndombele to former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, while he has also drawn comparisons to his compatriot N'Golo Kante.

Last season, Ndombele impressed against Manchester City in the Champions League, escaping the City press with ease on countless occasions and demonstrating his forward-minded approach.

His combination of power and technical ability make him an old-fashioned box-to-box midfielder, who can be effective in attack or defence.

Ndombele is the player Pochettino really wanted

Ndombele was called up for his country last October and made his debut as a substitute against Iceland.

His first start came towards the end of 2018, against Uruguay, and he has since earned four caps for Les Bleus.

France head coach Didier Deschamps has previously said: "He knows how to do everything in the middle, he is powerful, technical."
