Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodri has rejected a move to Manchester United and is close to joining Manchester City, according to reports.

The 22-year-old has told Atletico's president Angel Gil Marin that he wants to leave this summer after Diego Simeone had attempted to persuade the player to stay at the club for another season.

Rodri has attracted interest from several sides in Europe but City and Bayern Munich are the only two clubs he is considering.

According to Marca, Manchester United indicated that they would pay Rodri's €70 million (£63m) release clause but the midfielder is not interested in a move to Old Trafford with the club in the Europa League and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer facing a major squad rebuild.

Paris Saint-Germain were also willing to sign Rodri but the player is not keen on a move to the French champions.

According to Sky Sport Italia, City have confirmed that they will pay Rodri's release clause and are now in discussions with the midfielder's representatives over his contract.

Pep Guardiola reportedly views Rodri as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho, who turned 34 last month.

Atletico are planning to sign Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente as his replacement.
