Sad day as African player drowns in swimming pool 2 days after playing for his club

Resolution Impala Saracens' player Richard Sidindi Akoth has passed on after drowning while swimming at the club's training ground on Monday morning, February 25.

Sidindi played as a fullback at Impala which he joined in 2011 from Kisumu RFC.

He was part of Saracens' squad that went down 18-11 to Homeboyz in the Eric Shirley Shield last weekend.

He also featured for the Kenya 7s Rugby team during the Sevens circuits.

"It is with the saddest regret that the Kenya Rugby fraternity and Impala Saracens Rugby Family announce the death of Richard Sindidi Otieno, an astute Impala Saracens Rugby Family team player since 2011," Impala said in a statement.

"The untimely incident happened this morning (February 25, 2019) in Nairobi while on a routine swimming exercise where he is suspected to have drawn," the statement added.

According to sources close to the deceased, Otieno was a prolific swimmer and it is believed that he might have pulled a muscle cramp while under water, leading to his death.

A post mortem is expected to be conducted on the body to determine the exact cause of his death.

Otieno is a former student of St. Mary's Yala and attended Maseno University.

Following his demise, a number of clubs have taken to social media to pay tribute to the departed star.
