Gary Neville explains why Mauricio Pochettino must replace Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Gary Neville believes Manchester United must replace Jose Mourinho with Mauricio Pochettino as the manager has the same core values as the club.

The Red Devils brought an end to Mourinho's two-and-a-half year stay at Old Trafford following an disappointing start to the 2018/19 campaign, with the side sitting sixth in the Premier League table.

Michael Carrick is expected to take over from Mourinho as caretaker boss until the end of the season but United will now begin plans to find Mourinho's permanent successor.

Neville was one of few former United players to defend Mourinho during his struggles and took a pragmatic approach when reacting to the Portuguese's dismissal.

'Recruitment over the last few years been erratic, the current team [hierarchy] have had three chances of appointing a manager - and they're probably going to get a fourth,' he said on Sky Sports.

'The club needs to reset, it's not just a moment to sack Mourinho. They need to take stock, restructure, and be sensible with recruitment and decision making at the club.

'It's not about rushing for the first manager available. They must ensure he's the right manager. They will to pay for him probably and put the right football structure around him.

'The club has got to restructure with more intelligent people in there who understand football, not just hiding behind the manager. Not just change at managerial level.

'The players themselves will come under pressure because they can no longer blame manager. Negative tactics, that excuse has now gone and they've got nowhere to hide.

Neville believes that Tottenham boss Pochettino is the ideal candidate to come in and succeed Mourinho at Old Trafford.

'I said last season that for me it should be Mauricio Pochettino, not just because of what he's done at Tottenham,' he added.

'Look at United's values - belief in young players at Southampton and Tottenham, performance levels, style of play, how he carries himself publicly and privately.

'I've spent time at Spurs' training ground and he's the ideal candidate. They've tried managers who have won European cups, won the league.

'The three key principles should be promotion of youth, entertaining football and winning football matches.'
