Checkout incredible record Ronaldo can break if he wins the Ballon d'or

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are the players with the highest number of Ballon d'Or awards after winning five titles each.

Both stars have been at the top of their games since they gained prominence in world football in 2009 when the Portugal international won clinched the award for the first time while at Manchester United.

However, the 33-year-old is among the few players who have won the award with more than one club in history - but no player has won the prize with three different clubs.

The award was created in 1956 to honour exceptional football stars after their performances all through the season.

Blackpool's Stanley Matthews was the first recipient of the award after beating Alfredo Di Stéfano and Raymond Kopa of Real Madrid to the prize.

Apart from Messi and Ronaldo, no other player has five Ballon d'Or awards but Michel Platini, Johan Cruyff and Marco van Basten have three each to their credit.

The trio were exceptional for their clubs during their playing days after winning a lot of accolades and re-writing their histories.

In total, 25 players have been recipients of this prestigious award since inception, and there is a chance the number increases this year if a new player wins.

Six Barcelona stars have won the awards 11 times - making them the club with the most award - followed by Real Madrid who have won the prize ten times from six players.

Italian League giants Juventus and AC Milan have won the title eight times apiece, while three Bayern Munich stars have won it four times.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Johan Cruyff are the two stars to have won the award with two different clubs.

The Portuguese star won with Manchester United and Real Madrid - but could be the first to win with three different clubs if he wins this year's edition at Juventus.

Cruyff clinched the prize twice while at Ajax Amsterdam and won his last with Spanish League side Barca (1971,73, and 74).

The winner of this year's edition will be announced on December 3rd, 2018.
