Thibaut Courtois faces £200,000 fine as Chelsea begin disciplinary procedures against goalkeeper

Chelsea have opened disciplinary procedures against Thibaut Courtois and are set to hit the goalkeeper with a £200,000 fine for failing to report back to training this week, according to reports.

The 26-year-old has told the club that he wants to join Real Madrid this summer as he wants to be closer to his two children who live in the Spanish capital.

Chelsea are willing to sell Courtois but will only give the deal the green light once a replacement is signed.

Courtois was due back to training on Monday alongside his Belgium teammates Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi, but the goalkeeper failed to turn up in what appears to be an attempt to force through his switch to Madrid.

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri had planned to hold talks with Courtois in a last-ditch bid to convince him to remain at Stamford Bridge for one more season.

But according to The Sun, Chelsea have opted to open disciplinary proceedings against the Belgian after he refused to show on Tuesday.

It's also reported that Courtois could be fined £200,000 - equivalent to two week's wages - as punishment for missing training.

Chelsea are in a difficult position as they risk losing Courtois on a free transfer to Madrid next summer as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Atletico Madrid's Jan Oblak and Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga have both been targeted by Chelsea as potential replacements.
