Chelsea confirm signing of Jorginho from Napoli

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Napoli midfielder Jorginho.

The Brazil-born Italy international had been on the verge of joining Premier League champions Manchester City but the chance to continue his relationship with Maurizio Sarri, whose appointment as Antonio Conte's successor was also announced on Saturday, forced a change of heart.

Jorginho, who played a pivotal role in the Napoli side which pushed Juventus all the way for the Serie A title last season, underwent a medical earlier this week before signing a contract reported to be worth £102,000-a-week.

Chelsea are understood to have paid a combined fee of around £57million for both Jorginho and Sarri, who is now expected to step up Chelsea's summer recruitment drive.

The Italian midfielder has been handed the No. 5 shirt at Stamford Bridge and agreed to a five-year contract, which sees him through to 2023.

'I am absolutely ecstatic to be here at Chelsea. It is not easy to become part of such a big team so I am very, very happy,' Jorginho said at his unveiling.

'I am excited to play in such an intense league, for a team that gives everything to play and win.'

Club director Marina Granovskaia is confident that Jorginho can help bring success in a new era for Chelsea.

She said: 'We are delighted Jorginho has chosen to join Chelsea.

'He was one of the most coveted midfielders in Europe and will become an important member of the playing squad.

'He has demonstrated his quality working under Maurizio Sarri and we are convinced his signing will help bring further success to Stamford Bridge.'
