Arsenal complete signing of Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria

Arsenal have completed the signing of Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Torreira, the midfielder, was in England for medical tests on Monday, and following the successful completion of said tests he has penned a deal with the Gunners.

The 22-year-old, who made 74 appearances in Sampdoria following his arrival in 2015, joins Arsenal following a superb World Cup for Uruguay; Torreira helped La Celeste reach the quarter-finals, before they were knocked out by France.

The length of the contract he signed with the north Londoners has not been disclosed.

The former Pescara midfielder was thanked for his service at Sampdoria by the Italian club's president, Massimo Ferrero, when they announced the deal on Twitter.

Torreira will wear the number 11 shirt for the Gunners, and he'll report for Arsenal trainingin early August having been handed an extended break due to his World Cup committments.

Unai Emery, the Arsenal manager, said of the deal: "In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game.

"A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup. He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing.

"We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season."
