Jose Mourinho remains confident of landing Toby Alderweireld despite talks between Manchester United and Tottenham breaking down, reports say.

United and Spurs have been locked in transfer negotiations since the end of the season, but are some way apart in their valuation of the centre-back.

Alderweireld wants to exit Tottenham and the club are prepared to sell the Belgium international for the right price.

The Evening Standard claim United were convinced a bid of £55million would be enough to lure Alderweireld away, but Spurs have upped their asking price.

The two clubs are now deadlocked, but the current status of talks has not dampened Mourinho's hopes of signing the defender.

Tottenham want to sell Alderweireld before a £25million release clause activates next summer, but the club and it's chairman, Daniel Levy, are notoriously difficult to deal with when it comes to transfers.

Levy rarely budges on an asking price and expects to collect a huge figure for Alderweireld, as the 29-year-old is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

United hope Tottenham's interest in Anthony Martial may help move negotiations along, but it remains to be seen if the French striker will opt to leave Old Trafford.

Alderweireld has already been offered a five-year contract by United and a significant wage increase.

Spurs' last salary offer to Alderweireld was £120,000 a week, and United are believed to have bettered that offer by quite a distance.

United got their window off to an exciting start this week with the signing of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred.

The announcement was quickly followed by confirmation United had captured the signature of Porto full-back Diogo Dalot.
